Enter your details to estimate Grundsicherung.
Grundsicherung is Germany's means-tested basic support for people at retirement age or with permanent full reduction in earning capacity. This English calculator keeps the German SGB XII terms you will see at the Sozialamt, including Regelbedarf, Mehrbedarf, Kosten der Unterkunft, Schonvermögen and Grundrentenfreibetrag.

Example calculations
Single person at statutory retirement age, EUR 650 monthly pension, EUR 640 rent, EUR 110 heating costs, no countable assets.
Approx. EUR 663 Grundsicherung per month
The model need is EUR 1,313: EUR 563 standard need plus EUR 750 housing and heating. The pension is fully counted here.
Single person, EUR 950 statutory pension, at least 33 years of qualifying Grundrente periods, EUR 640 rent and EUR 120 heating costs.
Approx. EUR 655 Grundsicherung per month
The calculator applies the allowance for Grundrente qualifying years. In this profile, EUR 281.50 of pension income is protected.
Couple at retirement age, EUR 1,100 combined pension, EUR 760 rent, EUR 120 heating costs, EUR 19,000 countable assets.
Approx. EUR 792 Grundsicherung per month
With EUR 10,000 protected assets per adult in the calculator, the couple's assets do not block the estimate.
Single adult, permanent full disability, EUR 450 earned income, disability mark G, decentralized hot water, EUR 650 rent and EUR 100 heating.
Approx. EUR 1,107 Grundsicherung per month
Additional needs for mobility and hot water increase the estimated need, while part of earned income remains protected.
Frequently asked questions
Who can receive Grundsicherung in old age or disability?
Grundsicherung under SGB XII can apply if you live in Germany, cannot cover necessary living costs from income and assets, and either have reached the statutory retirement age or are permanently fully disabled for work. The local Sozialamt checks the final entitlement.
What are the 2026 standard needs?
The 2026 standard needs remain unchanged from 2024 and 2025: EUR 563 for single adults and EUR 506 for each partner in a couple. The actual total need can be higher because reasonable housing costs, heating, health insurance and additional needs are added.
What is the difference between Grundsicherung and Bürgergeld?
Bürgergeld under SGB II is for people who can generally work. Grundsicherung under SGB XII is for people at retirement age or permanently fully disabled adults. The monthly standard rates are similar, but the authority, eligibility path and income rules differ.
Which rent and heating costs are counted?
The calculator adds the rent and heating costs you enter, but the Sozialamt decides whether housing costs are locally reasonable. Local caps differ by city and district. If you enter warm rent, make sure heating costs are not counted twice.
How are pension and other income counted?
Statutory pension, occupational pension, private pension, earned income and other income generally reduce the entitlement. The calculator includes important allowances, especially for Grundrente qualifying periods, additional retirement income and earned income.
How much protected asset allowance is used?
The calculator uses EUR 10,000 per adult, so EUR 10,000 for a single person and EUR 20,000 for a couple. Assets above the protected amount can block entitlement, but not every asset is automatically usable; details are reviewed by the Sozialamt.
Which additional needs can I enter?
The calculator supports additional needs for disability mobility marks such as G or aG, decentralized hot water and medically recognized expensive diet. These additional needs can materially change the estimate.
Do children have to pay for their parents' Grundsicherung?
For Grundsicherung in old age and disability, children or parents are generally only relevant for maintenance if their annual total income is above EUR 100,000. A spouse or partner living in the same household is treated differently and can be included in the means test.
