Enter an amount to calculate VAT

Use this VAT calculator when an invoice, quote or receipt needs a quick DACH gross-net check. It keeps the familiar German term Mehrwertsteuer visible while using English search terms like VAT, gross amount, net amount and invoice total.

Example calculations

German invoice with 19% VAT

Net invoice amount EUR 1,000, Germany selected, standard VAT rate 19%.

VAT is EUR 190 and the gross invoice total is EUR 1,190.

For reduced-rate goods or special exemptions, the invoice category still matters; the calculator handles the arithmetic.

Swiss gross amount back to net

Gross receipt CHF 108.10, Switzerland selected, standard VAT rate 8.1%.

The net amount is CHF 100.00 and VAT is CHF 8.10.

This is useful when a price already includes Swiss VAT and you need the net base for accounting or reimbursement.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate VAT from a net price?

Multiply the net price by the VAT rate and add the result to the net price. For example, EUR 1,000 at 19% VAT becomes EUR 1,190 gross.

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the VAT rate. At 19%, divide by 1.19. The difference between gross and net is the VAT amount.

What VAT rates are used for Germany, Switzerland and Austria?

The standard rates used by the calculator are Germany 19%, Switzerland 8.1% and Austria 20%. Reduced rates exist for specific goods and services, so invoice classification can still change the correct rate.

Is VAT the same as Mehrwertsteuer?

In everyday German business language, Mehrwertsteuer and Umsatzsteuer are often used around the same invoice calculation. English-speaking users usually search for VAT, so this page uses both terms.

Can I use this for cross-border invoices?

You can use it to check the arithmetic, but cross-border VAT treatment depends on the customer, place of supply, reverse-charge rules and registration status. That needs proper invoice and tax review.

Does the calculator include small-business exemptions?

No. It calculates VAT once a rate is selected. If a small-business or exemption rule means no VAT is charged, the legal reason must be checked outside the calculator.
